ENDGAME
by Samuel Beckett
Directed by Ann Hoste
October 2-4 & 8-11 at 7:30,
October 5 & 12 at 2:00 pm,Stage II

One of the most highly respected examples of the Theatre of the Absurd, Endgame was known to be Beckett's favorite play.  The title is actually taken from a term used to describe an ending in chess where the outcome is already known (Beckett, an avid chess fan, saw the parallel between the chess end game and final stages of life). Set in a lonely universe of static energy, the time and place some-where on the brink of oblivion, four people ponder their seemingly perpetual plight in a bare room devoid of sunlight.  Two live in trash cans, with no legs, another can't sit down and can't leave, and the fourth is blind, tyrannical, and confined to a battered chair on wheels.  Death seems imminent, the world outside post-apocalyptic, yet life's farcical nature takes up much of the chatter.
 Beckett:  "It;s a beautiful day, isn't it?"
The Friend:  "Yes, it makes one glad to be alive."
Beckett:  "Aw now, I wouldn't go that far..."
